Laboratories

Roads, Railways and Airports Laboratory

Description:

The Group of “Roads, Railways, Airports” manages the activities of the Laboratory of Roads, Railways, Airports, formerly the Laboratory of Road, Railway and Airport Construction, founded together with the Institute of Road Construction of the University of Palermo in the academic year 1959-60.
Strengthened over the years to meet the needs of advanced technological research, the Laboratory has made it possible to carry out interlaboratory experiments for the development, validation and harmonization of tests on road materials on an international basis

The Roads, Railways, Airports Laboratory also provides third-party services as an Official Laboratory for civil construction materials testing ex L. no.
1086 of Nov. 5, 1971, and is equipped for all routine and advanced tests in the sector, to provide assistance and services to Managing Authorities, Administrations, Contractors, Manufacturers of materials and Professionals (designers, construction managers, managers at various levels) involved in the construction and maintenance of roads, railways and airports.

SMARTIlab | Sustainable Multi-functional Automated Resilient Transport Infrastructures laboratory.

Description:

SMARTIlab is a research group at University of Palermo that investigates smart solutions for Sustainable Transport Infrastructures.
Founded in 2021, the Sustainable Multi-functional Automated Resilient Transport Infrastructures laboratory (SMARTIlab), is a research group within the Civil Engineerig department at the University of Palermo (UNIPA).
The research group develops projects involving different sectors of transport infrastructure such as:
  • Investigation of sustaibable materials, such as rubberised asphalts and bio-binders;
  • Monitoring of experimental sections with sensors;
  • Sustainability assessment of conventional and unconventional pavement materials and pavement activities, i.e. Life cycle assessment (LCA).

Our mission is to address the upcoming challenges of asphalt pavements by providing innovative solutions to guarantee a smoother transition to a more sustainable society.
