Official Laboratory of “Material and Structure Testing”

Description:

The official “Materials and Structures Testing” Laboratory is a place of documented significant expertise in the experimental analysis and certification of the technological properties of construction materials and foundation soils.
The laboratory, which covers an area of about 3,000m2, in addition to space for geotechnical and structural testing, has laboratories equipped with first-rate analytical techniques and instrumentation dedicated mainly to the characterization of bituminous binders and the study of different aspects of various types of mixtures used in road superstructures and their production and application techniques.

State-of-the-art instrumentation is also available for monitoring pavement presentations, signage, and street lighting systems during their service life.
In addition to its research, consulting, and contracting activities, the laboratory also serves teaching purposes for the numerous Civil Engineering courses and the training activities of the School of Doctoral Studies in Engineering and Architecture (SDIA).
It is also part of the consortium of laboratories belonging to the Interuniversity Center for Road and Airport Research (CIRS) for advanced research activities in land and air transport infrastructure together with the Polytechnic University of Marche, the Polytechnic University of Turin and the University of Padua.

Rheology and rheometry laboratory

Description:

The rheology and rheometry laboratory of the Department of Engineering and Architecture is active and operational in the study of these two properties of fluids and binders intended for road or industrial use, of elastic, viscoelastic continuities, and possibly time-dependent behavior.
A great deal of experience has been gained in the physical and rheological characterization of traditional and modified bituminous binders with and in the development of specifically modified mixtures (polymers, chemical-functional agents, waxes, tire powder to provide improved performance (increased adhesion, fuel resistance and photometric parameters) in different contexts.
The laboratory has rheometers that can operate in shear strain or shear stress control, adopting parallel plate or coaxial cylinder configurations.

Recently, the instrument fleet has been enriched with a TwinDrive rheometer, based on the latest and most innovative technologies, characterized by two counter-rotating axes that allow investigating the rheological properties of complex fluids, with the imposition of a strain rate field unaffected by hydrodynamic instabilities that can evolve into turbulence.
The instrument is also equipped with an optical microscope with a CCD camera for real-time imaging of the motion field.
