LaSS3 | Road Safety Laboratory
Description:
In the Laboratory of Road Safety at the University of Roma Tre there is a full-scale virtual reality driving simulator employed for the purpose of testing and analyzing driving behavior under various environmental and traffic conditions.
The main issues addressed are:
– verification of design elements (specialized rides);
– driving support systems (ADAS) and augmented reality systems;
– autonomous vehicles;
– road safety for weak users (vehicle interaction with pedestrians and cyclists);
– human factors.
The driving simulator is an advanced tool capable of reproducing a driving test in a simulated environment.
This makes it possible to repeat the same tests by varying multiple parameters under study while maintaining, compared to road tests, the highest levels of safety for the driving subject.
From a hardware point of view, the simulator consists of a real vehicle (Toyota Auris) converted to a driving simulator by removing all mechanical components and replacing them with electronic elements connected to a remote workstation, which is the actual core of the simulation process.
On the software side, on the other hand, STISIM DRIVE simulation software enables the creation of countless driving scenarios, characterized by multiple road geometric configurations, environmental and traffic conditions, and the management of the entire simulation process.

NDTLab | Non-Destructive Technology Laboratory
Description:
Activities conducted in the Nondestructive Technology Laboratory are aimed at the development and application of nondestructive investigation (NDT) methods to the inspection and monitoring of transportation infrastructure.
The NDTLab relies on several nondestructive technologies, including various Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems for monitoring road pavements and transportation infrastructure more generally.
There are also numerous active collaborations with major industrial and public players operating in the field.
More recently, research activities have been directed toward the application of Remote Sensing techniques and in particular Satellite Interferometry (InSAR) for the purpose of monitoring transportation networks.
The use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) installed on Earth-orbiting satellites enables the collection of densely updated databases of electromagnetic images.
The availability of these datasets, with a ground resolution capable of up to the meter, offered by national and European space agencies, has enabled the deepening of specific data processing techniques for the inspection of infrastructure networks.
Thus, the main areas of investigation and application contexts covered by the activities carried out by the NDTLab can be summarized as follows:
– monitoring of road pavements;
– inspection of road and railroad bridges and viaducts;
– survey of airport runways and aprons;
– assessment of the condition of railroad ballast.
