Roads Laboratory
Description:
The Roads Laboratory engages in interdisciplinary research in road infrastructure engineering.
The main equipment consists of a dynamic driving simulator, which includes the main elements of the cockpit of a real city car.
Three 43-inch screens, integrated into the very structure of the simulator, are used for audio-visual reproduction of virtual driving scenarios.
The hardware equipment is complemented by a two-degree-of-freedom platform, capable of reproducing roll and pitch phenomena.
The system makes it possible to simulate virtually any plano-altimetric configuration of roads and landscapes, as well as buildings and infrastructure.
It does not lack the ability to change visibility conditions, depending on the time of day and whether fog is present.
In addition, adverse weather conditions, such as rain and snow, can be reproduced.
The main activities carried out are:
- analysis and modeling of users’ driving behavior in common traffic events, such as crossing a crosswalk or overtaking a vehicle;
- The study of the effects on driving of potentially hazardous conditions, such as adverse weather events, infrastructure deficiencies, and dangerous driver behavior;
The development of new technologies to serve autonomous or semi-autonomous driving, also based on machine learning algorithms.
